Local Races
« on: May 03, 2009, 06:51:56 PM »
I'm sure most of you have some sort of local race in your area like 5ks and stuff.
but, how many of you have Marathons or 1/2's in your area?

This is the first year that their doing an Annual Fitness Festival. It's really exciting.
This whole weekend has been booked with stuff.
On Friday they had a fitness expo.
Saturday was a 5k run/walk
And today(Sunday) was a 1/2 Marathon and a Full Marathon, and a Cycling Criterium where they raced around a 1 mile loop. (it was amazing, their one mile splits were like 1:30 minutes) it was cool.
This is the first year we've ever had a marathon in my city and it was really cool to see. Me and 2 other friends volunteered cutting about 500 oranges into quarters for the post-race stuff lol and also at the finish line clipping off time ships from the shoe laces of all the runners.
Overall it was a busy day of sunburn and fun! The winning guy came in at like 2:31 and the girl was 3:10 or so. There was only 300 ish people running the marathon.

just out of curiosity, any marathons near you? ultras? or any other important races?
I think it's kind of special hehe ;D

We have two major marathons, one is with the Kentucky Derby and also has a half-marathon, and the other is in the fall. The first one has almost 12,000 runners (marathon and half combined). It's pretty cool. I ran the half last year. We also have a ton of local 5ks and trail races. We have a couple ultras and trail marathons. Overall, we have a lot. :)

I live in Louisville. It's not huge, but the races get a lot of publicity, what with the Derby and everything.

And yeah, it was really awesome! I want to do another one soon. The whole experience was cool, even though I wasn't fast :P

There's a small marathon every summer about 40minutes away from my house...
Only the 5k's, 10k's, and 15K's there are HUGE though. About 10,000 people in them usually during the big festival in July.
Other than that city, most races are very small. Usually anywhere from 50-150 runners.

theres like one big annual marathon/half marathon every year, and theres like 2 other low-key marathons that i know of.  we got like 3 big ultra's that alot of ppl do.  alot of races that involve running, swimming, rock climbing and kayaking.  not to many 5/10k's though :(

We have one major marathon in the city, the Bluenose International weekend. They've got 5k, 10k, half and full, and a kids run. I'd be doing the 5/10k, but it's really over priced. $55 for a 10k? No way. I'm a poor college student! It's actually the weekend after next. If I didn't have church, I'd definitely volunteer. There's also the Johnny Miles Marathon and the Valley Marathon in the fall, both about 1 hour away.
We are what we repeatedly do: excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.

I am fortunate to have lots of races in my area.

- Local 5K/Half/Full Marathons
- Local 5 miler
- Local "Main Street Mile"
- Local "Down Hill Mile"
- Local Biathlon (200m swim + 1.5 mile run)
- Local 5K on a towpath

we have a bunch of little 5ks and various other distances like 5 mile, 3k, and 10k.  The New Jersey Marathon is held like 15 minutes from my house.  i think it normally has like 2,000 people in the full marathon.
on a side note, i love watching crits haha.  every year my dad does the green mountain stage race and there's an awesome crit in burlington.

it's a short bike race with a bunch of laps pretty much.  it's like a sprinting race i guess.  they're usually like 5k i think.
